WQ Pixel in Schools
BBIFMAC works with schools in the Lower Burdekin and Bowen regions to educate students on water quality and the environment. It brings a community focus to its education program, helping students to understand what local factors affect water quality and how it can be improved.
Students are taught how to monitor water quality and each school is provided with a test kit similar to that provided to farmers. Each school is encouraged to set up a regular monitoring program where they monitor a local creek or wetland. Students take samples from the site and test for electrical conductivity (salt) and turbidity (sediment). A sample is also collected in a bottle which is then collected by BBIFMAC staff and transported to the BBIFMAC laboratory where it is tested for nutrients (nitrate and phosphate). The results are reported back to the students who use this to evaluate the health of their creek or wetland.
